'Goon' squad tops Canada B.O.

'Goon' Canuck hockey pic "Goon" performed a rare feat at the local box office over the Feb. 24-26 frame, besting a handful of Hollywood debuts. The ensemble comedy, co-penned by thesp Jay Baruchel and Evan Goldberg ("Pineapple Express"), topped the charts with an estimated $1.2 million from 251 screens as of Feb. 26.The homegrown pic's performance was helped by a strategy from distrib Alliance Films that launched "Goon" simultaneously both in its original English-language version and a dubbed French translation for the Quebec market. The film scored almost double the average market share in Quebec, the country's second-largest province. "It's very gratifying to make a film work equally well in both languages, because it almost never happens," says Mark Slone, senior vice president of market at distributor Alliance.Alliance crafted dual publicity campaigns for "Goon," one that featured Hollywood actors Seann William Scott and Liev Schreiber, which rolled out in most of the country, while another catered to Quebec tastes and focused on Francophone star Marc-Andre Grondin ("C.R.A.Z.Y."). "Goon's" aud was mostly in the 18 to 34 demo, with females comprising nearly a third of ticketbuyers, the distrib says. The movie also received media attention on the eve of its debut when some outdoor advertisements were pulled in Toronto over complaints that they showed Baruchel making an obscene gesture.Magnet Releasing, the genre arm of Magnolia Pictures, plans a limited release of "Goon" in the U.S. this spring. Harrison Ford Not In Talks To Star In 'Blade Runner'

Fans of the sci-fi classic "Blade Runner" may have gotten their hopes up over the weekend after Twitch reported that Harrison Ford, the star of the original, was in early talks to return for director Ridley Scott's follow-up. Unfortunately, Twitch's scoop didn't pass the Voight-Kampff test. Deadline is now reporting that Alcon, the company producing Scott's proposed return to the world of replicants, has completely denied any rumors surrounding negotiations with Ford. Calling the rumor "patently false," Alcon co-head Andrew Kosove reiterated what had been previously stated about the film, stating "What Ridley does in 'Prometheus' is a good template for what were trying to do. He created something that has some association to the original Alien, but lives on its own as a standalone movie." Alcon stands by their original intention to make the next "Blade Runner" movie as a "total reinvention" of the series, while maintaining connections to the original film. Most took this as a sign that Ford would not return, and Kosove previously said as much, explaining "In no way do I speak for Ridley Scott but if you're asking me will this movie have anything to do with Harrison Ford, the answer is no." As for whether Kosove thought Ford could, in theory, come back, he left it open to development. "In advance of knowing what were going to do, I supposed you could say yes, he could," Kosove said. "But I think it is quite unlikely." It's currently unclear when Scott will direct his return to "Blade Runner." Recent reports have pegged Cormac McCarthy's "The Counselor" as a likely next project. How would you feel if Harrison Ford did not appear in the next "Blade Runner" film? Let us know in the comments below and on Twitter!

Kate Hudson Finds Everly

She'll battle killers! When you think of female action stars, chances are your mind flits to, say, Angelina Jolie, or Kate Beckinsale or even, more recently, Haywire's Gina Carano. We doubt it heads straight to Kate Hudson. But the actress, better known for her rom-coms, is looking to change all that with Everly.Director Joe Lynch crafted the idea for the thriller before handing the concept over to Yale Hannon to crank out the script, which ended up on the Black List. Everly sees a down-on-her-luck woman (Hudson) fighting off assassins hired by her ex, who happens to be a nasty mob boss. So it's basically a wacky rom-com, but with lots more punching. All right, all right... It's a thriller. The tweak this time is that the story is set entirely in one room, which makes us hope Lynch has lots of good ideas to make it work visually. Producers Adam Ripp and Rob Paris think so, and they're also convinced that Hudson can switch things up."When we heard that Kate wanted to make the transition into an action star, we knew we had found our Everly," they said in a statement picked up by the Hollywood Reporter. "The physicality and intensity of this role will be transformative for her." We'll see...
